Experience earned in the same fight that reaches the top level is thrown away

Players at the highest level keep fighting, and many games just stop counting. Worse, the leftover from the very fight that gets them there often vanishes. Here is how to carry every point forward into a second, endless kind of progress without rounding errors.

Why this works

Effort should never vanish just because a ceiling was hit. Finishing the climb first and only then turning the surplus into a second kind of progress means a reward that crosses the ceiling is paid in full, and the small leftover is kept for later.

When not to use it

Skip it when the game ends at the top and further play should simply feel complete, or when a second track would crowd out the main story. Then offer something to do at the top, such as a harder mode, instead of more numbers to collect.
