Levels and skills

Learning paths through this topic

Skill Tree

A skill tree lets players decide what their character becomes, and each choice opens up later ones. That gives them something to plan for.

Level-up curve

Works out how much experience each level costs, so early levels come fast and later ones take more work. It handles the sums that are easy to get wrong: several levels at once, the bar between two levels, and the top level.

Experience and Levels

Levels give the player a clear sense of getting stronger and a next goal that is always close. Rising costs keep the early levels quick and the later ones a real achievement.

Perk Choices

Perk choices make every level-up a small decision instead of a gift. Because the hand is partly luck, no two runs build the same character, and the player has to work with what shows up.

Ability Gates

Gates turn what the player can do into a map of where they can go. A place seen early becomes a reason to come back later, and every new ability opens up something that was always there.

Achievements

Achievements give the player extra goals beside the main one and a reason to try things the story never asks for. The pop-up makes a small win feel seen, and the list of goals shows what is still left to do.

Faction Reputation

Reputation makes the world remember. The player's choices change how doors, prices and words are given, so siding with one group has a price, and helping everyone is not free.

Prestige Reset

A prestige reset turns a run that has slowed down into a fresh start that is faster than the last one. The player gives up a lot, gets something lasting, and the game can go on for much longer without running out of numbers.

Meta-Progression

Meta-progression turns a lost run into a step forward. The player always leaves with something, so failing feels like progress and each new run starts a little stronger.

Difficulty Settings

Players come with very different skill and patience. A choice they make themselves lets a newcomer finish the game and gives an expert a real challenge, without building two games.

Dynamic Difficulty

Players struggle and coast at different times. Nudging the challenge toward what each player can handle keeps a stuck player in the game and a strong player interested, without asking them to pick a setting.

Tech Tree

A tech tree gives the player a long goal to plan toward. Choosing what to research next, and waiting for it, makes each unlock feel earned and shapes how the player plays in between.
