Spielerando

A mentor is paid again and again as a newcomer's level goes up and down

Rewarding experienced players for guiding a newcomer is a good way to keep both in the game. The reward must be paid exactly once per milestone, even when the newcomer jumps several levels, loses a level after a rebalance, or gets back to it later. Here is the bookkeeping.

Why this works

Progress that can be lost and regained must be paid by the furthest point ever reached, not by each change. One remembered high mark covers jumps, setbacks and the end of the program, and nobody can be paid twice for the same step.

When not to use it

Skip it when you would rather the mentor be paid for something the newcomer does than for a number, such as staying active for a month. A level reward invites rushing the beginner, so pay for lasting play instead.
