A player is promoted to a new rank and loses it again after one bad match

In team ranked play, rank points move after each match. A promotion that vanishes in the next defeat feels awful and makes people stop playing. Here is how to size the gains against a team's average strength and give a new rank a short protected period.

Why this works

A rating is an estimate, and one bad evening should not erase a hard-won climb. Rewarding upsets more than expected wins keeps the estimate honest, and counting protected games, not days, gives the shield only to those who actually play.

When not to use it

Skip it in casual play, where a rank means little and a shield only adds rules to explain. Also skip it where a rank is awarded once at season end; there a drop mid-season does no harm and the shield is wasted effort.
