Spielerando

A friend who starts late can never catch up to the group's level

A group has played for weeks and a newcomer wants in, but at normal speed they stay behind and cannot join the content. A catch-up bonus helps, but it must fade smoothly and must not reward people who are hopelessly behind or break the other protections. Here is how it fits together.

Why this works

A boost works best when it is tied to the need it answers. If it is worked out from the gap at every reward, it vanishes on its own as the player catches up, and nobody has to remember to switch it off.

When not to use it

Skip it in a game with no race to the top, where players enjoy the early levels slowly and a boost would rush them past content they came for. Then offer a skip as a choice instead of pushing it on everyone.
