Spielerando

A high-level friend joins a low-level area and flattens everything in one hit

Players want to play with a friend who is far ahead, but the veteran makes the area pointless for everyone else. Scaling the veteran down is the usual answer, and it hides traps: what happens to their equipment, their skills, and the real character they must get back later.

Why this works

What a player has earned should never be overwritten by where they stand. Working out the lowered strength fresh each time, and shrinking gear and skills along with the level, means leaving the zone always restores everything, even after a crash.

When not to use it

Skip it when the area is meant as a place of power, where returning veterans enjoy being strong, or when the zone is so small that nobody stays. Then leave the veteran alone and simply give them less reward there.
