Fill the party slots when some members cannot be swapped out
The story insists that two characters travel with you, but the player also wants to pick favourites for the remaining places. Here is how to build the active group so the required ones are always in, the choice is honoured as far as it fits, and a broken setup is caught early.
Why this works
The story's needs are not up for negotiation, but the player's taste is. Placing the required people first and filling what remains from the player's wishes respects both, and failing loudly when the required ones do not fit points the blame at the author, not the player.
When not to use it
Skip it when no one is required and the player may build any group, or when the group is fixed by the story for a whole chapter. Then a plain list of members is easier than a rule for filling places.
