Bring a companion back at a fair level after a long absence
A companion who left early returns far weaker than everyone else and is useless, or a loyal friend suddenly jumps past the player. Here is the rule that lifts them close to the group without ever taking anything away or running ahead.
Why this works
Catching up should feel earned, not handed over. Lifting a returning friend toward the group, never above its best member and never down, keeps them useful without making the player's own growth look pointless.
When not to use it
Skip it in games with no levels, or when the point of the return is that the friend is weak and must be protected or trained. There let the player do the work, and offer a short training scene instead.
