Let a companion refuse gear that goes against their beliefs
A healer who will not wear anything made from animals, a knight who refuses stolen goods. Auto-equip must respect that, explain itself, and still leave the character with something sensible rather than empty slots.
Why this works
A character with beliefs is believable only if the beliefs cost something. Honouring them while still choosing the best of what is left, and saying why a better item was refused, makes the refusal feel like personality rather than a bug.
When not to use it
Skip it when the choice of gear is the player's puzzle and the companion has no say, or when beliefs would leave a character helpless in a fight. Then let them object in words but still use what they are given.
