Spielerando

Choose which party member makes a skill check, and who may help

A locked door, a haughty guard, a trap on the floor. The player expects the best person for the job to step up, not whoever happens to be first in the list. Here is how to choose that person, who is out of the question, and how helpers add a little without making the result silly.

Why this works

People expect the one who is best at something to do it, and the others to lend a hand without taking over. Choosing by skill among those who can act, and capping the help, keeps results believable and experts worth having.

When not to use it

Skip it when the player should decide who acts, as in a game about managing a crew, or when only the main hero can do the deed for story reasons. Then let the player pick, and show the odds for each choice.
