Refund a hero's skill choices without removing what the story gave

A player wants to rebuild their character, but some skills came from a plot event and others stand on top of those. Refunding everything breaks the story, and refunding too little cheats the player. Here is the rule that gives back exactly what can be given back.

Why this works

A gift from the story is part of the plot, and anything it stands on must stay, or the gift would hang in the air. Everything else was the player's own choice, so it can be given back at the price actually paid.

When not to use it

Skip it when choices are meant to be final, as in a game where a mistake is part of the tale, or when rebuilding is free and nothing is ever lost. Then a costly rebuild or a plain reset is simpler.
