Give a large reward that jumps a hero over several levels at once

After a huge story reward the hero rises by one level and keeps a bar that is far past full, or the extra is thrown away at the top level. Here is how to hand out the reward so every level is earned, the remainder carries over, and the top is handled.

Why this works

A reward is a quantity to be spent step by step, not a single event. Paying out level by level until the amount runs dry makes a big reward and many small ones come to the same result, and each level gets its moment.

When not to use it

Skip it when the game has no levels, or when growth comes from choices and not from a bar that fills up. Also skip it when a hero should gain only one level per event, to pace the story.
