Spielerando

Accept a hero's name with umlauts and spaces but refuse the bad ones

A name field that rejects an accent, accepts a name made of spaces, or lets a player call themselves exactly like a main character is a small insult at the very start. Here is how to clean what was typed and decide whether it may be used.

Why this works

A name is part of who the player is, so the rules should block only what truly causes trouble. Tidying what was typed first, then judging letters by what they are rather than by an English list, treats every culture alike.

When not to use it

Skip it when names are chosen from a list, or when the game needs real accountability for what players call themselves, for example in a public chat. There you need moderation and not only a spelling check.

Say this to your AI

Use the Spielerando entry "Accept a hero's name with umlauts and spaces but refuse the bad ones" (read_entry hero-name-validation-unicode) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.
