I raised the view distance a little and the game became unplayable
Seeing a bit farther sounds cheap, but the work and memory grow much faster than the distance does. This entry lets your AI work out how many areas are really loaded for a given distance, and what the largest setting is that your budget allows.
Why this works
Loaded area grows with the square of the distance. Knowing the count and the cost per step lets you choose a setting by arithmetic rather than by trial and a frozen game.
When not to use it
Do not use it for games that load fixed levels instead of an endless world; there, memory is set by the level, not by the player's view.

Say this to your AI
Use the Spielerando entry "I raised the view distance a little and the game became unplayable" (read_entry survival-view-distance-cost) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.Or skip this and connect the MCP: your AI then finds all of this by itself.Connect the MCP
