The map of places I have explored makes my save file balloon
A map that remembers where the player has been can grow bigger than everything else in the save, although it only says yes or no for each spot. This entry gives your AI a compact way to store it that stays exact when loaded again.
Why this works
Explored maps come in large solid stretches: unseen, then seen, then unseen. Storing the length of each stretch instead of each spot is exact and tiny, and truncated data can be detected on load.
When not to use it
If the player explores in scattered single spots, such as a map of fog that is lit one cell at a time, the lengths are as many as the cells and nothing is saved.
