Is a better pickaxe worth its price when most of the trip is walking?
A tool that mines twice as fast does not make a player twice as rich, because walking, carrying and selling take the same time as before. This entry shows how to work out how fast an upgrade pays for itself.
Why this works
A faster tool only speeds up the part of the trip spent gathering, while walking and selling stay the same. So the real gain is smaller than the speed gain, and the payback has to be worked out from the whole trip.
When not to use it
Skip it when the tool changes what is possible, such as reaching a new kind of ore, rather than how fast something is done. Price that upgrade by the new options it opens, not by the time it saves.
