Show a final scoreboard where ties are handled fairly
When two players finish with the same points, a scoreboard that just lists them in some order says one of them did better when they did not. Ties need a rule for who is ahead, when they really are equal, and what number comes after a shared place. Here is a ranking that gets all three right.
Why this works
A rank is a statement about how many people finished ahead. Equal results must share a place, and the next place must skip, otherwise the numbers say something false, however tidy the list looks.
When not to use it
Skip it when only the winner matters and a tie must be broken for a single prize: add a tiebreak round or a rule such as who got there first. A shared first place does not decide who gets the one trophy.
