Spielerando

Which players were away from the keyboard in a team match, and for how long?

A teammate who stands still hurts the whole group, but the time since the last action only tells you something if you also look at the start and end of the match. This entry shows how to measure the longest idle stretch of each player.

Why this works

Idleness is measured in gaps, and the gaps at both ends count too. Someone who joined and never touched anything has no gap between inputs, so looking only between actions would call them perfectly active. Adding the start and the end of the match closes that hole.

When not to use it

It is wrong where long calm stretches are part of play, such as a sniper waiting, a scripted scene or a pause. Cut those out or the quiet will look like leaving. And it only sees input, not intent: someone away from the keyboard may be watching a friend.
