Walking in first person bobs the view in a way that makes some players feel sick
A little sway makes footsteps feel real, but done carelessly it keeps going in the air, jerks when you stop, or runs out of step with the feet. Here is what should drive the sway, what should drive its size, and how it comes to rest.
Why this works
A bob feels right when it is tied to the feet: one rhythm per step walked, so it speeds up and slows down with the walking and never argues with the footstep sounds. Small, and eased in and out, it adds life without shaking the eye.
When not to use it
Do not use it in games where the player aims precisely, or for people prone to motion sickness; the view moves without their input. Leave it off by default there, or give a clear switch, and rely on sound for the feeling of steps.
