Clicks land in the wrong place when the game is scaled to fit the window

A story drawn at one fixed size is stretched to fit any window, with bars at the sides. The picture looks right, but the buttons answer next to where you clicked, or react when you click a black bar. Here is the conversion in both directions.

Why this works

The game and the window disagree about where things are, so every click must be translated once from the window's measure into the game's own measure. Do all the testing in the game's measure, and a click outside the picture simply belongs to nothing.

When not to use it

Do not scale to fit when the game must fill every edge, such as a map or a drawing tool; the bars waste room there. Make the layout itself flexible so buttons and text rearrange to the window, and only keep the artwork fixed.
