The key object in the background is cut off on a phone or an ultrawide screen
Fill a screen of any shape with one painted background and something has to be cropped. If it is always the centre that is kept, the clue near the edge disappears. Here is a way to choose the crop around what the scene needs shown.
Why this works
A picture that fills any screen shape must lose some of itself, and the loss falls on the long side. Letting the artist name the one spot that matters turns the loss from a coin toss into a choice: the crop is built around that spot.
When not to use it
It fails when the scene has two important things far apart, so one point cannot keep both on a narrow screen. Then split them into two views, or change the point partway through. If the whole picture must be seen, show it with bars instead.
