Characters on a talking stage swap places or jump when someone enters or leaves

With two or three portraits on screen, a newcomer should slide in at the right side and the others make room, without anyone trading places. Here is a way to keep the stage steady and how the spacing is worked out.

Why this works

Where a character stands should follow from who is on stage right now, not from a position remembered per character. Then the order can never get mixed up, the gaps are always equal, and every arrival or departure only changes the list.

When not to use it

It breaks down when characters need fixed places that mean something, such as a throne, a doorway or a speaker who always stands at the same spot. Then give those characters their own marked positions and only spread the rest.
