Zoom in on a character's face for an emotional line without cutting the head off
A close-up on a portrait sells a tearful or angry line, but zoom into the middle of a full-length picture and you get a chest, and on a tall phone the crop shape changes too. Here is how to frame a face from a single picture on any screen.
Why this works
A close-up works when you frame the face you know about, not the middle of the picture. Knowing where the face is lets you cut a window of the right shape for any screen, and when the window would hang over the edge, the edge wins and the face moves off centre.
When not to use it
It is the wrong tool when the scene is about the body or the surroundings, such as a gesture, a fight or a crowd; cutting in on the face hides what matters. Show the whole figure there, or cut between two shots.
