The view creeps by itself on a worn controller, or jumps when I nudge the stick slightly

Gentle looking matters in a quiet game, but every stick rests slightly off centre, and the usual fix creates a new problem: nothing happens, then suddenly a lot. Here is a shape for the stick's response that stays fine at the smallest touch.

Why this works

A stick never rests exactly in the middle, so a small circle around the middle must be ignored. Stretching what remains back to the full range, and softening it near the centre, keeps the first touch gentle and the full push still fast.

When not to use it

Do not use the softened curve in fast games where the player must turn quickly and exactly, such as a shooter or a race; the weak start feels sluggish. Use a straight response with a small dead zone there, or let the player choose.
