Make villagers startle one after another, spreading outward from a loud event

When a dragon roars or a bell rings, a crowd that all jumps in the same frame looks like a stage trick. The reaction should travel outward, weaker with distance, and the far corners should stay calm. Here is a way to give every person their delay, height and a fixed hop that fits any crowd size.

Why this works

News and sound take time to travel and fade with distance, so a crowd that reacts together looks staged. Giving each person a start time and strength from how far they stand is enough, and needs no memory per person.

When not to use it

Skip it when the event is meant to reach everyone at once, such as a world-wide alarm or a magic spell, or when the crowd is too small to show a wave. Let all react together, or choose just a few people to react.
