Let a lantern on a pole lag behind when the hero starts, and swing forward when they stop
A lantern, flag or bag carried by the hero should not be glued upright. It should hang back when they set off and swing on when they stop. The trick is in what makes it move: not the hero's speed, but how that speed changes. Here is the formula, with the sign that is easy to get wrong.
Why this works
Riding in a moving hand, a hanging thing is not pushed by the speed but by the change of speed, as you feel in a bus that sets off. So it drops back when the carrier starts, swings on when they stop, and hangs steady in between.
When not to use it
Skip it when the carried thing is held rigidly, like a torch gripped in a fist or a shield on the arm, and for far-away characters. Rotate it with the arm or leave it still, because a swing there looks loose and wrong.
