How many different playthroughs does my branching story really have?
Ten small choices that rejoin do not make ten stories, and they do not make a thousand situations to test either. This entry counts both numbers, so you know whether to test every road or only every situation a scene can start in.
Why this works
What a scene can depend on is the situation it is entered in, not the road taken to get there. Two different roads that leave the same facts behind need only one test, which is why the real workload is much smaller than the road count.
When not to use it
Misleading when a scene's content depends on the order of events or on the exact road, such as a story that remembers a sequence. Track that history as part of the situation, or you will undercount what needs testing.
