Spielerando

The ending gallery shows 100 percent too early or never reaches it

Players replay a story several times, endings get renamed, one is cut, and the completion number drifts: over a hundred, stuck at ninety-nine, or full while one ending is still missing. This entry counts the way players expect.

Why this works

A progress number is a promise to the player, so it must count what they can really reach, once each. Counting different things as one, or rounding in the player's favour, makes the promise false at the one moment it matters.

When not to use it

Not needed if there is no collection to complete, or if a plain list of found items is clearer than a percentage. A bare percent can also pressure players, so show a count only when finishing really is the goal.
