Regrow a picked bush after the player returns, with no growth in winter
The berry bush across the valley is not loaded while the player is away, so it either stays bare for ever or is ripe the moment they pass. Here is how to work out, on arrival, how far it has grown from the days that passed, without growth in the cold months.
Why this works
Nobody watches an unseen plant, so working out its growth on arrival is cheaper and exactly as good as simulating it. What counts is the stored amount of growth, not the stage, because that keeps every partial step and gives the same answer however often you look.
When not to use it
Skip it when the plant reacts to things that happen while it is unseen, like a fire, a flood or an animal eating it. A count of days cannot know that. Use event records for those, or keep the area awake around the plant.
