Check that the layers under the ground leave no gaps and get older downward
The miner digs through clay into a layer of fossils that the history says came later than the stone beneath it, or finds a hole in the world where no layer is defined at all. Here is a check for the ground's layers, with the exact depth where a layer starts and ends.
Why this works
Ground builds up over time: what lies deeper was laid down earlier. So each layer must begin where the one above ends, and none may be younger than what it sits under, or a sharp reader senses the world is made up.
When not to use it
Skip it when the land was shaken by quakes, folding or magic, where old rock can lie on young. Those breaks are a story worth telling. Then mark the fault on purpose and let the check ignore that spot.
