Spielerando

Warn of a coming disaster with signs the player is likely to meet

The volcano erupts on the day the story says, and the player who spent the week fishing never saw a thing and feels cheated. Here is how to space the omens so they come faster toward the day, and to check against where the player really was whether any warning reached them early enough.

Why this works

A surprise feels fair when the player could have seen it coming, and that depends on what this player actually did, not on an ideal one. Signs that come closer together build dread, and checking them against real movements shows who missed them.

When not to use it

Skip it when the disaster is meant to strike with no warning, such as a sudden betrayal, an accident or a horror scene that works because nothing prepared you. Then do not hint at all, and make the shock part of the story.
