Spielerando

Stop a desert from touching a frozen land and work out the buffer between

A world drawn from separate ideas ends up with sand dunes right beside a snowfield, and the lore has no way to explain it. Here is how to list which landscapes may touch, find every bad border on the map, and learn which landscapes have to lie between them.

Why this works

Landscapes change by steps, because the weather and the ground change by steps. Writing down which kinds may touch, and searching for the chain of kinds that joins two that may not, gives a map a believable reason for every border.

When not to use it

Skip it for a fantasy world where the clash is the point, such as a magic border between fire and ice, or a map shown as separate islands. There mark the border as a deliberate wonder and explain it in the story.
