Age an abandoned building so the roof falls before the walls
A hut left for a hundred years should not look like a castle left for a hundred years, and a roof should not hang in the air over a wall that has crumbled. Here is how to decay a building part by part so the picture of the ruin tells the right story.
Why this works
Buildings fall apart part by part, not all at once. Giving each part its own material and tying it to what holds it up makes ruins look right, since soft things fail first and nothing is left hanging over a missing support.
When not to use it
Skip it when the ruin is hand-drawn art, or when many buildings must age at once and one shared age is good enough from far away. Also skip it where fire, war or magic wrecked the place; the damage then follows the event, not the years.
