Spielerando

Find the borders where a mild region meets a deadly one with no warning

The player steps over a stream and the wolves that were harmless a moment ago are replaced by creatures that kill in two hits. Here is a check that looks at every walkable border on the map, ignores places the player cannot reach, and says how much buffer the story needs.

Why this works

Players learn the danger of a place by walking into it. A sudden jump between two places they can reach teaches nothing and just hurts, so only borders on the walkable map matter, and each needs enough steps in between.

When not to use it

Skip it when the sudden drop is the joke or the lesson, such as a dragon's lair on a peaceful hill meant as a surprise, or when the player sees the danger from afar and chooses to go. Then the signpost matters more than the gentle slope.
