Find rivers on your map that run uphill or end in the middle of nowhere
A river that climbs a hill makes the explorer's travel notes absurd, and one that just stops raises questions the story cannot answer. Here is a check that walks a river cell by cell against the height of the land and tells you the exact spot where it goes wrong.
Why this works
Water always runs down, so a river is a test of the land under it. Walking the river step by step against the heights shows the exact place where it breaks the rule, and tells you whether to dig a valley or raise a hill.
When not to use it
Skip it for a world with magic or odd physics where water can climb, or for rivers drawn only as decoration. Also skip it for rivers that vanish underground on purpose; mark those as caves instead.
