A big reward should lift the player several levels and keep the leftover

After a boss or a quest the reward can be bigger than a whole level, and games that only check once either lose the extra or stay a level behind. Here is the loop that handles any size of reward, including the top of the ladder.

Why this works

A big reward can be worth more than one level, and the player should get every level it paid for. Spending the reward level by level, and carrying the rest forward, makes sure nothing is skipped, lost or counted twice.

When not to use it

Skip the repeated spending if a level-up should be a rare, hand-given event such as a ceremony or a story reward. Then grant levels directly and never from points, so no big reward leaps past a scene.
