The level shown is sometimes one too low right at the moment of leveling up
Working out the level from a pile of experience points looks like one line of maths, yet it goes wrong exactly at the edges, where a player has precisely enough. Here is how to get the level, and the progress to the next, right every time.
Why this works
Two numbers that describe the same thing will eventually disagree. Keeping only the total earned, and working out level and progress from it every time, means a loaded save, a balance change or a reset can never leave them out of step.
When not to use it
Skip it when levels come from story beats or hand-picked moments rather than a running total. Then there is nothing to derive from; store the level itself, and the points toward the next one if you show a bar.
