Spielerando

Choose which veterans follow the army to the next mission when room is short

Between missions the roster is bigger than what the next map allows. If the game picks by list order, a veteran can be left behind on a whim and the order changes between loads. This entry gives a pick that is the same every time, keeps the story characters in whatever happens, and spends the places on the units who earned them.

Why this works

Players accept a hard cut when the rule is plain and always gives the same answer. Ranking by what a unit earned, with a fixed last tie-breaker, means no hidden luck and no change between loads, while story figures stay out of the contest.

When not to use it

Skip it when the player should decide who comes, which is often more fun and more personal. Then let them choose from the roster, and use this ranking only as the suggested default.
