Exploring should pay experience once per tile, plus a bonus for finishing a region
Scouts that uncover the map earn experience, and soon a player walks back and forth over the same edge to collect it again, or the bonus for a finished region pays at every step. This entry shows how to count only what is new, how to give the region bonus exactly once, and how to deal with a view that is cut by the map edge.
Why this works
A reward should follow what changed in the world, not what the player did. Comparing what was known before with what is known after pays exactly the new part, and a finished region can only turn from unfinished to finished once, so the bonus cannot repeat.
When not to use it
Skip it when the map is made fresh each time or keeps changing, so that old ground stops being old. There a fixed memory of visited places misleads. Pay for discoveries such as finds or secrets instead of for ground.
