A promotion makes a unit cost more supply and the army is suddenly over its limit

In games with an army size limit, better units take more room. When a squad ranks up in battle, the army can end up over the limit with nobody having built anything. Counting changes one by one makes the number drift from the truth. This entry shows what to count, what to forbid, and what never to delete.

Why this works

A number that is nudged up and down by every event will eventually be wrong, because two events can land together. A total worked out fresh from what exists cannot drift. Being over the limit then simply blocks new training and destroys nothing earned.

When not to use it

Skip it when the limit is a hard rule that must never be broken, such as seats in a vehicle or a team of fixed size. There the promotion itself has to be refused, so check before it happens.
