My letter-by-letter text shows the formatting codes as it types

Bold or coloured words in a dialogue box look fine when shown at once, but when the text appears letter by letter you see strange symbols flicker by, or the rest of the box turns bold. Here is how to reveal only what the player should read.

Why this works

The player reads letters, not the hidden marks around them. So the reveal must count only what is seen, carry the marks along untouched, and close anything left open at the cut, or the style bleeds into the next line.

When not to use it

Skip it when your text has no styling at all, or when you show whole lines at once, for example with a fade. Then a plain letter count is enough. It also does not help if the engine already hides marks while it types.
