A save gets corrupted when the game closes in the middle of saving

Phones die, tabs get closed, and a half-written save wipes out hours of a player's progress. Here is a way of keeping two copies so that one is always whole, how the game tells a good copy from a damaged one, and which copy to overwrite next.

Why this works

Writing over a file is never one instant, and anything can stop it halfway. If you keep the old copy untouched until the new one is whole, there is always one good copy left, and a count tells you which copy is newer.

When not to use it

Skip it when the platform already writes a file all-or-nothing, or when saves live with an online service that keeps its own history. Two copies would only add confusion there. Also skip it for data the player can easily redo.
