The "go back one line" button leaves old effects behind
Players love stepping back through a story, but after a step back the game still remembers a trust point or a found item from the line they just left. Here is how to record each step so that going back really undoes it, and how much history is worth keeping.
Why this works
Showing the old text is not the same as going back in time. To undo a line you must put back what it changed, including the fact that something did not exist yet, so each step needs to remember the value from before, not after.
When not to use it
Skip it in games where choices must have lasting weight, such as a story about regret or a hard mode with one life. Taking steps back removes the tension. Then offer no back button, or only for reading text again.
