Decide who gets a pickup when two players grab it at the same moment
Two players run to a health pack and both press at once. Whoever's message reaches the server first wins, which means the one with the better connection always wins. This entry shows a fairer ruling and a trick it must be safe against.
Why this works
Whoever arrives first on the wire is not always whoever arrived first in play. Collecting claims for a short moment, trusting claimed times only within a small bound, and preferring the closer player judges by play, not by route, and forgers gain nothing.
When not to use it
Skip it when pickups are plentiful or shared, so nobody loses much by missing one, or when each player can simply get a copy. Then no contest is needed and the fastest answer is enough.
