Change a boss fight phase exactly once, even when many players hit at the same moment

A boss should change its behaviour at some point of the fight, but with several players one big burst can skip a phase or trigger it twice. This entry shows how to hold the boss at the line, what happens with the leftover damage, and why a short pause is needed.

Why this works

A change in a fight is a story beat players should see in full. Giving each phase a floor that damage cannot cross, and a short immunity once it is reached, means a burst of simultaneous hits triggers exactly one change and no phase is skipped.

When not to use it

Skip it for fights that are meant to end in one big burst, such as a quick hunt of weak enemies, or when phases follow the clock instead of health. For small groups the immunity can feel dull: shorten it or use a slowdown.
