Mark several players for a boss attack without marking two who stand together

A boss attack that marks a few players works as a puzzle only if the marked players can spread out and the rest can stay clear. A random pick often puts two marks side by side. This entry shows a pick that avoids it and what to do when the group is too tight.

Why this works

A mark is only a puzzle if it can be solved. Choosing at random, but never two close together, means no bystander is hit by two blasts by design, and nobody can predict who is next. A fallback keeps the mechanic alive in a cramped group.

When not to use it

Skip it when the point is that the group must stack up to share damage, or when the attack targets everyone at once. It also fails for tiny groups where spacing is impossible. Target by role or by position instead.
