Give an assist to the players who helped just before a kill, and only those

A kill is often the work of two or three players, and the one who lands the last hit is not the only one who deserves a mention. This entry shows how long a helper counts, how much counts as help, and who must never be listed.

Why this works

A helper deserves thanks only if the help was recent and real. Looking at a short stretch before the kill, asking for a minimum, and leaving out the victim's teammates rewards teamwork without paying for tiny pokes or old damage.

When not to use it

Skip it when helping is not measured by damage, as with healers, scouts or blockers, who would get nothing: reward those contributions too, or choose another scheme. In games with no kill scoring, it only adds noise.
