Spielerando

Check that a treasure map's clues point to exactly one spot

Four steps from the mill and four from the oak sounds precise, until the player finds three spots that fit and digs up the wrong one. Here is a check that lists every spot matching the clues, so you know whether a riddle has one answer, several, or none.

Why this works

A riddle is fair when its clues, taken together, leave one answer. Testing every spot against all clues shows how many fit, and removing each clue in turn shows which ones do real work and which are only decoration.

When not to use it

Skip it when the player is meant to dig in a few places and be wrong, as in a game that rewards patience. Also skip it for a map the player draws on their own; there you cannot know the clues in advance.
