Spielerando

Check that the torches in the pack last through the dark parts

A dungeon with a long dark tunnel, a lit bridge and a dark crypt asks the player to ration light, and a map that cannot be crossed with the torches on offer is a trap nobody meant. Here is a walk through the route that says where the light goes out.

Why this works

A limited supply is only fair if the whole trip can be done with it. Walking the route and spending the supply where it is really used shows the exact spot where it runs out, and that spot tells the writer where to put more.

When not to use it

Skip it when running out of light is meant to be a tense, survivable part of the play, such as feeling your way through the dark. Then the player can recover with luck or skill; do not forbid it, but make it a choice.
