Spielerando

When do players stop uncovering new parts of the map?

Exploration is the promise of an open world, and it fades earlier than most designers expect. This entry shows how to find the hour at which discovery really stalls, without mistaking a short pause for the end.

Why this works

Curiosity fades gradually, so a single quiet hour tells you little, but a long run of quiet hours tells you a lot. Judging each hour against how fast the player explored at the start, rather than a fixed figure, makes the answer fit any map size.

When not to use it

Skip it when the map is revealed by the story rather than by wandering, or when most players leave before a few hours. There, look at where players stop following the main quest instead.
